Illinois will begin taking baby steps on the path toward marijuana legalization next week as lawmakers are scheduled to hold the first subject matter hearing on a bill that would regulate and tax recreational cannabis throughout the state.

The sponsors of the legislation, Democratic state Sen. Heather Steans and Rep. Kelly Cassidy of Chicago, announced Wednesday a joint appropriations committee hearing will be held at noon on April 19, during which lawmakers will hear testimony from various organizations, individuals, policy experts, officials from states that already have legalized pot for recreational use and the public.
