Mendoza releases state financial report, slams Rauner for ‘lawless fiscal climate’

Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s office on Tuesday released Illinois’ comprehensive annual financial report for the 2016 budget year, along with a strongly worded statement berating Gov. Bruce Rauner for “his failure in leadership” as the state’s fiscal condition rapidly deteriorates.

The report shows Illinois’ combined net deficit increased by $5.7 billion to $126.7 billion as of June 30, 2016, driven largely by mounting unfunded pension liabilities. 

With FY2016 being the first, full fiscal year since the sunset of the temporary income tax increase of 2011, the state saw income tax revenue fall by $3 billion, further exacerbating its financial woes.
