Federal appeals court upholds same-day voter registration in Illinois

Illinois’ same-day voter registration process is back in effect as of Tuesday, when a federal appellate judge granted a stay of a lower court ruling that would have halted Election Day registration throughout the state.

Pending appeal, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals will allow Election Day voter registration at polling places in counties with populations of 100,000 or more. The appellate court granted a motion filed by Attorney General Lisa Madigan that challenged a lawsuit claiming the same-day registration law was unconstitutional.
