Jobless rate, labor force down; manufacturing pummeled by job losses

The unemployment rate in Illinois is at its lowest level since January 2008, thanks in large part to a continuous decline in the labor force, according to state officials.

Preliminary data released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security show the jobless rate fell to 5.5 percent in August, down 0.3 percentage points from July.

August also marked the fourth straight month the labor force, which counts both the number of people who are employed and unemployed but looking for work, has shrunk. There were 3,000 fewer people employed last month, and the number of unemployed decreased by 5.1 percent to 363,700,…
