Illinois elementary school district spending habits are like Chicago’s

I went to a financial council meeting for my local elementary school district this morning.  Last month, the board of education voted in favor of adding a referendum that would increase property taxes.

Over the past decade, I’ve been happy with the education my children received in this district.  But I wasn’t paying attention to district finances.  Now I feel guilty, as a citizen and a taxpayer.

Like the city of Chicago, my district has grown spending significantly faster than revenue over the past seven years.  The “interest on long-term debt” reported (and buried) in a long report on district finances…
