Rauner signs bill decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana possession

Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday signed into law legislation decriminalizing possession of cannabis in small amounts.

Effective immediately, the new law makes possession of up to 10 grams of marijuana a civil violation punishable by a fine ranging from $100 to $200.

Those caught in possession of small amounts of pot no longer would face the possibility of jail time, and civil violations would be expunged from a person’s record every six months on Jan. 1 and July 6. However, local ordinances will not be impacted and municipalities will be able to add to fines or penalties, such as requiring substance…
