Illinois has been a solidly blue state for more than 20 years, voting Democratic in the last seven presidential elections.

In fact, Democratic candidates have won the popular vote in Illinois by more than 10 percentage points in every presidential election since 1992.

But once you get outside the city of Chicago and suburban Cook County, you’ll find the majority of cities and counties are either heavily Republican or at least lean to the right.

Just take look at this map of election results from the 2014 gubernatorial election that saw Illinois voters elect the state’s the first Republican governor in 12 years.
